Ants have been farming fungi for about 66 million years – ever since the asteroid that doomed the dinosaurs.
The impact blocked out the sun for years, plants died, fungi flourished on the dead material – and ants began to farm them. That is what dated family trees of 475 fungus and 276 ant species show (Smithsonian).
